Former Intel Chairman Andy Grove spoke this week at the Plug-In 2008 Conference in San Jose. The topic of his talk is the role of what he calls "dual-fuel" vehicles capable of running on electricity and gasoline or comparable liquid fuel.
He estimates that if the 100 million "large form factor" vehicles that include pick-ups, SUVs and vans where converted to plug-in hybrids, we could cut our oil imports by 50%.
To prove the feasibility of his idea, parked next to him were a Chevy Equinox converted by U.C. Davis and a Ford F-150 converted by Hybrid Electric Vehicle Technologies, Inc in Chicago.
Like the electric vehicle conversion program in Mexico being managed by EAE, Grove sees the thousands of automotive repair shops across the country becoming conversion centers.
He also calls for a revision of intellectual property laws with a shift to an Open Source approach being developed in the IT industry.
He lays out a series of steps to make this transition possible including calling for an industry task force to present a plan to the next president on Inauguration Day 2009.
He concludes by stressing the importance of repairing the Commons, a shared responsibility.
"We face a clear and present danger," he stated.
